On the third episode of Nashville Star, contestants were to take Pop songs and make them country.
I thought some of the POP song choices were strange. I pretty much never listen to pop music but I still think I could have come up with more recent and interesting POP songs then a few of the contestants. Ashlee Hewitt and Shawn Mayer were brave and took recent POP and made it country. I liked both of their performances. I also liked Melissa Lawson’s performance last night. She sounded a lot like Trisha Yearwood.
My favorite performance was Gabe Garcia. Picking a fast paced and latin song was a smart choice. He did a great job with the Ricky Martin song Living the Vida Loca.
Even though I wasn’t surprised or heartbroken that part-time model Justin Gaston was voted off, I did feel bad for him since he has improved. I couldn’t believe how NOT country that Tommy Stanley sounds. I don’t know why he is on Nashville Star. I just don’t see it. He seems like a capable musician but I don’t see him as country at all.
I also didn’t get the point of the guest star performance. I don’t even know who Danity Kane is? Why couldn’t they has someone like Carrie Underwood or Leann Rimes sing. They both are POP/country cross over types.
I will tune in again next week to see how Gabe is doing. I am not excited about the show. I feel some acts like Pearl Heart and the Teen Duo are getting special treatment because they are young and sweet. John and Jeffrey don’t want to hurt their feelings.

I agree that they should have had a cross-over country singer as the guest… Carrie Underwood, Leann Rimes, Rascal Flats or anybody that has done well on the pop & country charts would have been cool. Danity Kane pretty much showed everybody what country shouldn’t be… haha
I think the only reason NBC had a pop night is to get more viewers… which is kind of sad, but I guess that’s what TV is all about.
I agree that Gabe is awesome!! I have heard him and some of the other contestants acoustically and he really is even better in person. Same goes for Ashlee Hewitt… I think they will end up being the top two!! They are both very real and seem to have the whole package.
I would like to mention that the contestants only get to pick from two songs each week. So I hope people don’t judge them by the song choice. Same goes for their wardrobe.
