I recently came across a great country rock band. The Inside Outlaws is a group of singer-songwriters and musicians from the Detroit Michigan area. The group includes: Sam Wood, Don “Doop” Duprie and Ty Stone. It also includes: Scott Kinson, Pat V and the Detroit 3, Screamray, and Matt D’Mitz. You can find a great background write-up about Don “Doop” Duprie and the band’s background at CD Baby Doop & The Inside Outlaw Info/Review
The first thing you notice when you listen to the album, Blood River, is that the musicians are seasoned and talented. You can just here the experience in the song writing, vocals, and instrumentals. The second thing that strikes you is that the album is from 2008. The country rock sound on this album is so classic that you can’t believe it is new. That is a compliment! If you like southern country rock you will love this album.
One of things I liked most about this album is that it is raw and not pretty. It is not a feel good CD. It is just good. The opening song, “Shoot You Down” is about a man who will shoot the man who stole his wife if he runs into him. “Let You Bleed,” is my favorite song on the album. It is about a man trying to save his son from completely destroying himself. It is a very powerful song. Anyone who has dealt with a family or friend with a severe addiction can relate to this song. I also really loved the break-up song, “If I Were You I’d Probably Hate Me Too.” This relationship gone bad song is great because their is no excuses. It is just blunt. I like that. On a deeper level you get that the guy doesn’t know how to deal with relationships or his issues. He just accepts that he has destroyed the relationship and she is leaving. All of the songs on this album are meaningful and well written. Like I said this is not pretty pop album. This is a true old school real grown-up country rock album. Give it a listen.
I have included below a description of all the songs on the album.
“Shoot You Down” – Song about a man who may kill the man who stole his wife.
“Without You” – This is a sad song about bad choices, loss, and love.
“Let You Bleed” – Song about always picking up the pieces for a loved one.
“If I Were You I Would Probably Hate Me Too” – This is a relationship gone bad song.
“Who’s To Say” – Who’s to say whether partying and drinking to excess to cope is bad or good. Some amazing electric guitar parts in this song too.
“Blood River” – Rough times in a Blood River.
“Tougher On You” – Sorry after a break-up. Neither side in the break-up are taking it well. I just love the view point in this song. It is great to recognize that after a break-up both sides can be completely devastated not just one side.
“Again” – He comes to the house at night and she lets him in again. He has a problem with drinking, fighting, etc. He swears to not do it again again. Song about forgiving again and again because she is in love. He leaves again at the end of the song. No happy ending here of course.
“Done Em Right” – Bonnie & Clyde type song.
“No Way To Live” – Song about playing music in bars as a lifestyle. The music helps him forget what a crappy life playing in bars night after night can be.
