Meaning of the video “Here Comes Goodbye”

I have seen online that some people do not understand what is going on in the video. What is happening is: The women in the car that arrives father has just died. The dead father is talking to his dead grandson at the beginning of the video. The grandson has from heaven to take his grandfather to heaven with him. The grieving daughter goes to the grave site to say goodbye to her father and tell him to take care of her son who had died at an earlier time.

I do not like Rascal Flatts, the song, or the video! I liked them ok until I saw them perform live and well, they were awful.

I understand that the daughter is saying goodbye to yet another family member (her dad) after already losing her son, but if that is the case, how come the mom isn’t also in tears if she lost her husband (or if ex-husband, it would still be the father of her child and she’s be sad).

I think she is not crying because maybe some time has passed. I know seeing your daughter so sad and having lost a husband recently should make you cry in that situation. The women did seem upset. Good point though.

Or maybe because it’s not about a death, and the video completely doesn’t fit the lyrics. Not to mention that the actress in the video cannot convey emotion correctly due to shotty acting. This video nearly turned me off the song all together. So I can understand how most people who pay attention to details would say that the video doesn’t make sense, they would be right. The song is amazing, the video sucks.

Thank you JLynn, I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought the video did not fit the song. I love the song and the video is touching, but they don’t go well together.

Its actually the follow up video from what hurts the most. He father makes her boyfriend leave after she finds out shes pregnant (which is where the boy comes in). So her and her father were on bad terms and shes coming there to say good bye to him. The song is from the mothers pov to the daughter and saying goodbye to her father after everything they were trough hence the line “One day I thought Id see her with her daddy by her side
And violins would play here comes the bride”

Sarah,

Thanks for the information. It makes a lot more sense to me now! The only thing that doesn’t make sense is if they were on bad terms then why is there a happy picture of her, the child, and mom and dad that they show in the video.

Anyway – regarding comments other people have left. I think many people have legitimate concerns about the video not fitting the song the way they would like. I love the video. I love the song. However I wouldn’t mind if Rascal Flatts made another video for the song that had actors play out an emotional break up.

As far as the happy photo of the family…fences CAN be mended. Although the girl and her father may have been on bad terms when he found out she was pregnant, it doesn’t necessarily mean they stayed that way. Perhaps she is visiting the graves on an anniversary of one of their deaths or she has finally accepted the fact that one or both of them is gone, and she has come to say goodbye. What kills me about this follow-up video, is that she already lost her boyfriend, then her son, now her dad. At this point, I would have gone CRAZY! The video makes me cry EVERYTIME I see it…but the worst thing is my 4 year old son always asks me “Mommy, why are you sad?”

I know what you mean Becky. I also find the video harsh. I have two young sons myself. That video is just so sad.

I bet you are right that she is just visiting on an anniversary or that she was in so much grief before this maybe the first time she is able to face it.

I’mm not sure your take on the “What Hurts The Most” video is correct. The Boyfriend is killed in a truck wreck at the end of the video with the girl setting beside the road at a cross in the final scene. Maybe we need to re-examine what is actually going on in the new video. There are no dipictions of the child dying, unless it’s in another video. Which makes this video Part 3.

How can it be a continuation of ‘What Hurts the Most’ if it’s not even the same girl? The boy in ‘What Hurts the Most’ also dies at the end of that video… Chris Sligh from the 6th season of American Idol co-wrote ‘Here Comes Goodbye’, so I don’t think it has anything to do with ‘What Hurts the Most’. I don’t think that the video is not supposed to completely match up with the song… It just gives another perspective to it – a sad one at that.

For everyone who says the video does not match the song they are obviously not listening to the words. There is not definition of the song it is one realm of what the song can mean. It means something different to everyone. The beginning of the song it talks about hearing the truck tires, she is talking about how something which is so normal and has happened so many times (“I can hear the truck tires coming up the gravel road,And it’s not like her to drive that slow, Nothings on the radio, Footsteps on the front porch I hear my doorbell She usually comes right in Now I can tell”) is somehow off. The mom is telling talking about knowing what here daughter is getting ready to feel and how she has been feeling. It is in the chorus. For anyone who has lost someone close to them understands this song and even some who haven’t. I lost my niece (she was an infant) and I understand it is talking about a state of mind. How in a split second your entire life can change. Rascal has done a great job on this video!!! I cry everytime but they did a good job!!

I have a hard time reconciling the video with the lyrics as it doesn’t seem to make any sense.

The song seems to be talking about lost love – “One day I thought I’d see her with her daddy by her side, and violins would play – “here comes the bride” ”

—-and—-

“here comes me wishing things had never changed and she was right here in my arms again”

—-and—-

and – “why’s it have to go from ‘good to gone’ before the lights turn on, yeah, you’re left alone, but here comes goodbye” -

********

the above lyrics are obviously talking about lost love and a break up, yet the video is all about a little boy dying. (the man in the video asks the little boy – “what’s it like?” (meaning being dead) and the little boy answers – “there are no more goodbyes”.

Also – in the beginning of the song – the lyric that she usually “walks right in”, but this time she “rang the bell” – speaks of a break up, not death……

I love Rascal Flatts, the song is great and the video is too, but I sure wish the two went together.

The meaning of the song was on the co-writer Chris Sligh’s blog:

http://frommymindtoyoureyes.blogspot.com/2009/01/story-behind-music-here-comes-goodbye.html

The way that they wrote it does not match with the video. I like the video – and I like the song, but I have to agree with the others that they do not really match.

I recently lost my son Ayden. He was three and a half months old. He died of a congenital heart defect. When he died, I took comfort in knowing that he will be with my great grandpa and my recently deceased uncles. That they can play trucks and trains… this video has a special meaning to me because of that.
